Buses (Indoor Air Quality)

Situation
Public transport vehicles fitted with air conditioning undergo a service once a year. This service may or may not include cleaning of the air conditioning coils and filters. Air conditioners on buses are just as prone to build up of mould and bacteria, as any indoor situation.
Buses are also obligated to comply with standard AS/NZS 3666.4 for Indoor Air Quality. The standard says that the maximum recommended count before action is required is 1000 counts per cubic meter of air. The client's business credo includes making use of any method available to improve the wellness of their vehicles for the benefit of their customers.
Treatment
Four buses were chosen, at various stages of SAN-AIR usage. Bus 104: Not treated with SAN-AIR. Bus 103: Treated with SAN-AIR for 1 week (serviced externally 10 months prior). Bus 102: Treated with SAN-AIR for 2 years. Bus 101: Treated with SAN-AIR for 2 years. Two readings were taken two weeks apart.
Test Methodology
- 01Four buses at various treatment stages were selected for comparison
- 02Bus 104 served as the control (no SAN-AIR treatment)
- 03Colony Forming Unit (CFU) readings were taken at two-week intervals
- 04Results compared against AS/NZS 3666.4 standard of 1000 CFU
Result
- Vehicles treated with SAN-AIR had better than 80% improvement in overall germ count
- Best result was a 91% improvement in germ count
- Vehicles with SAN-AIR had 97% lower mould contamination
- 60% lower bacteria counts compared to untreated vehicles
Conclusion
Bus maintenance with SAN-AIR provides easy compliance with AS/NZS 3666 1-4, an improved maintenance service cycle, reduced occasions where bus is out of service, and a healthier environment for passengers and employees.
